The Wilkes Heritage Museum houses the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame located in historic, downtown Wilkesboro. Each year the WAFS board nominates three local, musical people from the Blue Ridge area and vote on one of these individuals to receive the prestigious Dr. T.R. Bryan, Jr. award thus inducting the individual into the BRMHoF. The BRMHoF nominating board in conjunction with the BRMHoF voting committee elects the remaining members. Members are inducted at a musical ceremony and dinner held each June. The process is a continued partnership between the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame and Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society. Refer to events for info on the ceremony.
WAFS encourages old time, traditional, folk music and dance. The range of public domain music and songs is enormous. Irish, English, Deep South, African-American, and Native American music gives folks new to the music craft an eye opening experience. Amazingly folks that attend our meetings and gatherings learn so much from other musicians attending.
WAFS also encourages the art of song writing. An internationally known song writing contest is held annually in Wilkesboro, on the campus of Wilkes Community College during MerleFest. We love to hear that someone in our area has written a piece of work to enter in the Chris Austin Song Writing Contest.
