WAFS and Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Wilkesboro, NC presents Appalachian Christmas: A Christmas Card to the Community. Each year during Epiphany the program is held at the church in celebration of old Christmas. Free admission with a can of non-perishable food for h.o.p.e. Ministry.
The Wilkes Heritage Museum houses the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame. Each year the WAFS board nominates three local, musical candidates from the Blue Ridge area. These names are given to the BRMHoF board. This process results in one individual receiving the prestigious Dr. T.R. Bryan, Jr. Award thus inducting the individual into the BRMHoF. The BRMHoF nominating board in conjunction with the BRMHoF voting committee elects the remaining Hall of Fame members for the year. Members are inducted at a musical ceremony held each June at the Hall of Fame, 103 East Main Street, Wilkesboro, NC. (The nominees and selection for the Dr. Bryan award is a partnership between the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame and Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society Inc.)
WAFS encourages old time, traditional, folk music and dance. The range of public domain music and songs is enormous. Irish, English, Deep South, African-American and Native American music gives folks new to the music craft an extraordinary learning experience. Seasoned musicians tell us their talents are always improving through our meetings and gatherings.
WAFS also encourages the art of song writing. An internationally known song writing contest is held annually in Wilkesboro on the campus of Wilkes Community College during MerleFest. We love to hear that someone in our area used their creative talent to enter the Chris Austin Song Writing Contest. Chris was a native of Boone, NC and was among members of Reba McEntire's band killed in a plane crash in 1991. Find more info at merlefest.org
