Thank you for visiting the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society (WAFS) web site. Founded in 2000, WAFS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on nurturing musical appreciation and talent. Meetings are the fourth Monday of each month except December. Refer to event list for information.

Our mission is the enjoyment, perpetuation and encouragement of all types of acoustic music, educating the public in music appreciation and forms of self entertainment, sharing of musical ideas, venues, performing, passing down, and preserving this region's musical heritage for our youth.

President Susan Rhodes announced that she is still taking orders for WAFS TEE SHIRT and CAPS. The items will feature the WAFS logo, shirt colors are blue or gray, cost is $12.00 and $15.00. Items should be ready by MerleFest. Orders may be placed at WAFS meetings. Please state SIZE, COLOR, NUMBER OF ITEMS when ordering. PLACE YOUR ORDER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. This is a fund raiser for WAFS YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS. WAFS Inc. is a 501(c )(3) not for profit organization. Donations are tax deductible as prescribed under the law. Check with your tax professional.

NEWSFLASH 2018 INFO on Pre-MerleFest events, Pickin' Place at MerleFest and Little Pickers Instrument Pettin' Zoo! Beginning 2 pm Sunday, April 22, 2018 (prior to MerleFest) the celebration of music concert honoring the late Dr. T.R. Bryan Jr.(DOD 9.17.2011) Sadly, his beloved wife, Ruth (DOD 10.8.2017) will be with us in spirit this year. She will be missed at all the events. Ruth and Doc are singin' above! The musical festivities continue the entire week at the Pickin' Place at MerleFest 2018. If you are interested in volunteering with WAFS at MerleFest pre-activities, Pickin' Place at MerleFest or Little Pickers Instrument Pettin' Zoo at MerleFest contact Keith at 336.902.2570. The 3rd Friday of each month from Spring through Fall at the Wilkesboro Open Air Market: Musical performances are part of a continued partnership with the Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society, a 501(c)3 organization and the town of Wilkesboro. The free events are held beside the Wilkes Heritage Museum/Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame in the Wilkes Communications Commons, Main Street, historic downtown Wilkesboro, NC. ***NEWS FLASH*** GANDY DANCER JAMS FOR 2017 SEASON END FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2017. 2018 DATES TBA, CHECK BACK! Join us at 7 pm at the historic North Wilkesboro Southern Railway Depot located on Cherry Street. Pickers', dancers and music lovers of all ages welcome. Chairs are provided or bring your own, plenty of parking, handicap accessible, rain or shine, FREE event. Please no alcohol, tobacco or pets. This event will run every Friday night until October. Come join us and bring a guest.

NEWS FLASH!!! SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED. CONGRATULATIONS! CHAD RITCHIE winner of the Swannanoa Gathering scholarship and LIBERTY (LIBBY) HARBOUR winner of JAMCAMP at MERLEFEST scholarship.

WAFS encourages old time, traditional, folk music and dance. The range of public domain music and songs is enormous. Irish, English, Deep South, African-American, and Native American music gives folks new to the music craft an eye opening experience. Amazingly folks that attend our meetings and gatherings learn so much from other musicians attending.

WAFS also encourages the art of song writing. An internationally known song writing contest is held annually in Wilkesboro, on the campus of Wilkes Community College during MerleFest. We love to hear that someone in our area has written a piece of work to enter in the Chris Austin Song Writing Contest. We welcome you and your family to become a WAFS member. $20 individual, $25 family. Scholarships, meetings, workshops, and special volunteering at MerleFest are just some of the benefits we offer.



Alexander JAM Benefit - 2/22/2018 - 7:00 pm - Hiddenite Arts Center
The Rocky Face Ramblers will be performing a benefit concert for the Alexander Junior Appalachian Musician, a 501(c)(3) program. There will be a silent auction, cake walk, dance, etc. All proceeds will go to benefit the Alexander JAM program. Donations of instruments, guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin strings, fiddle bows, music stands, etc. can all be used. All donations are tax deductible, check with your tax professional. WAFS Monthly Meeting - 2/26/2018 - 7:00 pm - Wilkes Heritage Museum
Monthly meeting at the Wilkes Heritage Museum in downtown Wilkesboro on Main St. at 7:00 PM. The meeting will begin with a brief business meeting to recruit volunteers for MerleFest 2017. The museum is handicap friendly with an elevator at the back entrance, please no pets, alcohol, or tobacco. See you there.

Last meeting at the Wilkes Heritage Museum before moving to MerleFest .Still time to pay dues! Join us at the Wilkes Heritage Museum in downtown Wilkesboro on Main St. for our monthly meeting and jam. We will meet at 7pm for a short business meeting. After our feature work shop, we'll move into groups for old-time, acoustic folk, and blue grass jams. RockyFest 2018 - 4/21/2018 - 10:00 am - Rocky Face Park
Mark your calendars for RockyFest 2018, set for Saturday, April 21 at Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area, 3451 Rocky Face Church Rd, Hiddenite, NC 28636. This 6th annual event is sure to have something for everyone to enjoy. The event begins with a trail race at 8:00 a.m. at the new multipurpose building, but the main RockyFest activities will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The fun will include live music from Five Mile Mountain Road, New Ballard Branch Bogtrotters, Crooked Road Ramblers, Spencer Branch, Cane Mill Road, Gap Civil, Alexander Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) and others to be named soon, free rock climbing sessions, food, vendors, inflatables for the kids, and more. WELCOME to MERLEFEST*** Start the week on Sunday: 2 pm CELEBRATION OF MUSIC. Everyone invited to honor Dr. TR Bryan Jr. Before Dr. Bryan passed away in 2011, he requested the Pickin' start on Sunday prior to the festival. ARMBAND NOT REQUIRED. Free admission. Various bands and WAFS members are expected to participate. Meet members of Dr. Bryan's family that are carrying on his legacy and his love for music. Plan on joining us in kicking off the 2018 MerleFest. This is a free event. All ages, musicians, dancers, singer, spectators, welcome! Tobacco and alcohol free campus. Parking in Alumni Hall lots. Musicians subject to change.

Chad Lovette Memorial Run - 9/22/2018 - 8:30am - Carolina in The Fall
Chad Lovette passed away from brain cancer in July, 2016. To honor the memory of this inspiring young musician, singer/songwriter,Carolina in The Fall is sponsoring a 5k & 10k run at Cub Creek Park during the festival. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. The annual festival is located 100 E. Main St. Wilkesboro, NC. Cub Creek Trail is nearby. Brushy Mtn AppleFest - 10/6/2018 - 6 am till 3 pm - North Wilkesboro Train Depot Cherry St
Nostalgia takes over at this historic train station built in 1914 and registered with the National Register of Historic Places, as WAFS volunteers park vehicles on the depot grounds, $5 per vehicle. Best festival parking! This is our largest fundraiser. Proceeds support Youth Scholarships of WAFS. WAFS IS NOT HOSTING OFFICIAL PICKIN' AT APPLEFEST BUT PRESIDENT SUSAN RHODES INVITES YOU TO AN INFORMAL JAM AND REST A WHILE ON THE DEPOT STAGE. Bring your instruments and dancin' shoes and jam or just listen. Chairs provided or bring your own. Handicap friendly, please no alcohol or tobacco. Hope to see you! Appalachian Christmas - 1/6/2019 - 2:45 - 5:00 pm - Lutheran Church of the Atonement
The Lutheran Church of the Atonement, Brushy Mountain Road (Oakwoods Road) Wilkesboro will host "Appalachian Christmas - A Musical Celebration of Old Christmas, A Christmas Card to the Community". Free event, everyone welcome. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food as a donation to Wilkes County h.o.p.e. Ministry food bank. Wilkes Acoustic Folk Society Members and other musicians from the community will celebrate Epiphany with song and music of guitar, banjo, mandolin, harp, bagpipe, drum, hammered dulcimer, piano, organ, fiddle, and upright bass. Refreshments after the program.
